Abstract:
Rapid infiltration and drainage in a free-draining weighing lysimeter are assessed with a viscous flow approach that is based on the concept of moving water films. The two parameters film thickness and specific contact area of the film per unit volume of the permeable medium together with the rate and duration of water input suffice to quantify viscous flow at the Darcy scale. The two parameters are deducible from wetting front velocities and water content variations during the passing of the film. Temporarily perching water tables at lysimeter bottoms are considered artifacts of the lysimeter method that may severely alter the biogeochemistry of the effluent. The viscous flow approach assesses the duration of water perching from drainage flow interpretation. Perching in the sense of viscous flow occurred at most 10% of the time during drainage flow. Drainage ceased completely during a 6-mo period that yielded only 46% of rainfall compared with the 30-yr average. During rewetting of the lysimeter soil, viscous flow applied to infiltrations of nine precipitation episodes, showing successive penetrations of wetting fronts shortly before the onset of drainage.

Abstract:
Due to climate change, agricultural production in Europe will be challenged by higher temperatures and shifts in precipitation distribution that will give rise to frequent summer droughts. An adaptation of agricultural systems to these changes requires detailed knowledge of crop water use characteristics. This study aimed to evaluate the
dynamics of evapotranspiration and water uptake in different crops under the typical edaphoclimatic conditions of Switzerland. Seven years (2009–2015) of high resolution lysimeter mass data including 70 lysimeter-by-year combinations were evaluated. The “adaptive window and adaptive threshold “-filter (AWAT) was used to determine
evapotranspiration (ET), precipitation (P), crop coefficient (Kc) and water use efficiency (WUE). Additionally, FDR sensors installed in the lysimeter soil core allowed recording the temporal dynamic of soil water extraction. The evaluation comprised grain maize, silage maize, rapeseed, sugar beets, winter barley, winter wheat and temporary ley. The AWAT filter was successfully used to determine lysimeter P that was inserted in the lysimeter water balance equation to calculate daily ET. It could be shown that the peak of daily crop coefficient coincided with the time of flowering for all flowering arable crops. WUE’s lay in the range given by standard literature, but daily crop coefficients were clearly higher than proposed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) which is partially due to an oasis and border effect of the lysimeters.
Years with limited water availability were characterized by a comparably low Kc. For example, rapeseed in 2011 and maize in 2015 showed substantially lower Kc values. In accordance with the reduced Kc, readily available water was totally removed down to soil depth of at minimum 0.85 m. The limited water availability led to significantly lower yields only in case of silage maize in 2015. These results show overall current water supply to be sufficient under Swiss conditions; however, if drought events like in 2015 become more frequent and even more intense, yield potential of typical Swiss arable crops will be limited by water availability.

UGT celebrates its 25th anniversary

On the 5th of May more than 100 guests celebrated together with the UGT team the anniversary. The scientific colloquium highlighted important new projects of UGT. Our team presented in the field and in the production hall  many of our world wide known devices. Joy and leisure games complimented the wonderful festive day at our premises. TV, radio and print media took notice of the event and accompanied our anniversary. We thank our dear national and international partners, customers and friends for their contributions and for the visit.

1992 – Company Creation -On 2 May 1992, “Umwelt-Geräte-Technik GmbH” (UGT) took up its operation as a spin-off from ZALF e.V.
In 1999  the first own production facility was erected which provided a modern  machine park and modern production technologies.
In 2001  the first indoor expansion took place, this extension realized in 2001, provided additional production space.
In 2004 a pavillon provides space for workshops and offers work space and an ongoing ground water observation point got set up.
In 2008 on the campus Weihenstephan in Freising the Branch South was inaugurated. Here we carry through important workshops and are right in the heart of an important centre of environmental research
In 2010  we established our  service center France in Homècourt (Lothringen) which is located on the grounds of the Industrial Association GISFI.
In 2016 we doubled our prodcution space by erecting our new production hall. UGT is committed to the long tradition of the research location Müncheberg and as an employer UGT serves to the people of our region.

The 5th of May was a day that set the tracks towards future. The founder of the company, Dr. Manfred Seyfarth announced that the future of the company lies in solid and competent hands, because Dr. Sascha Reth, Managing shareholder of the company will continue the successful way with the team and set new impulse for the development. Dr. Reth used the occasion to introduce the new branch Manager in Müncheberg, Dr. Marco Reiche. Also the work with our international agents will be intensified and further expanded under the leadership of the strategic Sales Manager, Kerstin Thomsen with the sales team. The Team UGT was in focus, all employees went on stage and were honoured for their great work by the Management.
UGT is well prepared to go straight on towards a successful future. Each member of the team, weather it is research, production, sales or marketing appreciates and contributes to the successful further development of UGT.
We look forward to the next challenging 25years by working in the field of climate change and many other important topics to preserve our environment for the future generation.

G20 – a high level summit – UGT presents itself in the margin of B20 and on the eve of its 25th anniversary

The G20 Summit in Hamburg will take place on 7 and 8 July 2017. This high ranking summit unites the leading economies of the world but also developing countries and also very important international associations. Germany assumes G20 presidency. Chancellor Angela Merkel   will be in dialogue with industry, science and most different groups of society. On the 2nd and 3rd of May there will be held the B20 business forum. Global challenges – global change, this is one of the important work topics of UGT. So we are proud that on the eve of our 25th anniversary and on the eve of the B20 business meeting UGT was presented today on TV by ARD. Our patented container lysimeter stations are used for many experiments worldwide in the margin of climate change and how to work in a sustainable way with our environment.

Dr. Manfred Seyfarth and our team showed today some of our solutions to the TV-team. From South Korea, via China to France to Brazil – UGT cooperates with scientific institutes and universities world wide and produces the suitable instrument. We feel as a part of the B20 forum and contribute with our work and engagement to the process of a sustainable and responsible handling with environmental resources. We look forward to promising results of the G20 summit in Hamburg and good input and recommendations from the participants of the B20 meeting.

Visit us at the EGU in Vienna – Booth No 18

From Monday, 24th to Friday 28th we are presenting our new EcoUnit at the EGU in Vienna. Visit us and get knowledge about the possibilities in your research. We have brought a full functional EcoUnit (Ecotron) to the show. The UGT team is looking forward to discuss your special need.

An EcoUnit is a measurement system to investigate ecosystem functions in the
soil-plant-atmosphere system under defined boundary conditions. Ecotrons are used to investigate processes within the soil-plant-atmosphere system as well as the interactions between the compartments. Ecotrons are lysimeter applications beyond the investigation of only soil processes and thus the generic term for lysimeter applications of all kinds.

An Ecotron consists of three units. The lower unit contains the soil, which can either be inserted directly into the container or in extra stainless steel cylinders (lysimeters).
The latter allows the investigation of undisturbed soil monoliths. Up to four lysimeters
can be installed in one EcoUnit. Several soil sensors can be installed in the lower unit to collect soil temperature, soil moisture and soil tension data. To investigate root systems and root growth rhizotrons can be installed as well. The lower unit is equipped with a system to collect seepage water and a system to control the temperature conditions at the lower boundary of the soil. On top of the lower unit a second unit is attached, which isolates the environment above the soil surface from the surrounding. The size of the isolated habitat is big enough for growing of medium shrubs. The second unit can be equipped with additional walls to divide the EcoUnit in four self contained sub units.
On top of the second unit the upper unit is located, which contains equipment for irrigation, lighting and ventilation. The upper unit can also be equipped with sensors to
collect data of temperature and humidity as well as with a gas analyzer. The lower and upper units are equipped with a control cabinet containing the required power supply
and signal transformation as well as the measurement and control technology. The EcoUnit comes with a touch panel to visualize collected data and to control the EcoUnit.
The equipment and design of the EcoUnit are always optimized for
the customer-specific research goal.

Exhibition WASSER BERLIN INTERNATIONAL 2017

UGT was exhibitor at the exhibition WASSER BERLIN INTERNATIONAL 2017 which took place at Messe Berlin from the 28th to 31st of March. UGT was one of 450 exhibitors coming from 26 countries to present their range of products in the field of water. Four challenging days for UGT and agents and partners who visited the booth like In-Situ Europe or eom Austria. We used the opportunity to exchange opinion and discuss innovations and new strategies concerning the cooperation

We thank our dear clients for having seen us in hall 3.2 booth 118. New joint projects were discussed and first ideas were exchanged. In the focus of our presentation at the booth was this year  our technology of flumes with ultrasonic measuring system  which were developed to determine widely fluctuating flow rates, from very low to extremely high volumes. We can not only use them to measure after rainfall events but also these flumes are used to record agricultural and industrial discharge processes. Our cooperation partner Katronic showed at the booth also their ultrasonic system for clamp on ultrasonic flowmeters. Like this we highlighted the different options to use our technology depending on the application. With our high quality of In-Situ sensors and multiparameter sondes we give our clients the opportunity to measure in the  field of water quality and also water level.
Visitors of 20 countries visited the exhibition and nearly all nations also passed by at the UGT booth. Water supply and waste water disposal – this is the blue ribbon that unites the companies that work in this field and our highly estimated visitors from waterworks, water companies, engineers or scientific institutes also used our booth as a forum of brain storming. The conference programme especially attracted our foreign visitors, so from the Iran-conference some of the participants later on informed themselves about the UGT products. The exhibition strengthened the international cooperation. Environmental topics generally were in the focus of our talks. UGT was satisfied with the contacts that we made during the exhibition.

Inauguration of the new production hall at UGT GmbH Müncheberg, October 28th, 2016

UGT is happy to announce that we have doubled our production size. Our new  production hall has a size of 900m² and so UGT disposes now  of 1800m² production area.
 

Guests of honour at the inauguration were our  Minister for Economy and Energy of Brandenburg, Mr. Albrecht Gerber, our county commissioner,  Mr. Gernot Schmidt, the president of the chamber of commerce of Ostbrandenburg, Dr. Ulrich Müller, Sebastian Saule, Managing Director ZAB Brandenburg,  leading scientists of the Leibniz centre for agricultural landscape research, the city council of Müncheberg and many friends and business partners of UGT.

The new construction at the UGT premises was supported by the Ministry of Economics and Energy of the Federal State of  Brandenburg. The local authorities such as district and building authorities also supported the project by quick and efficient work concerning the   planning and building permission.
Big projects within Germany and abroad enabled UGT to plan this construction because there the limit of capacity in fabrication was reached  and so we planned a new step to further improve the work flow in our modern production lines.   There will be especially equipped rooms for microelectronics and  microsystem technology.

UGT makes more than 50% of its turnover in export. We cooperate with universities within Europe and abroad and our main share in exports goes to Asia especially to China and South Korea. Lately our first project was realized in Vietnam. Long traditions and narrow customer relations we have to our customers within Europe. Also the Russian market is important for UGT and above sale there are also many scientific joint projects.
The inauguration was combined with a special forum of the 3 chambers of Industry and Commerce of the Federal State of Brandenburg which are located in Frankfurt (Oder), Cottbus and  Potsdam The members of the commitees of external economic relations took the opportunity of a brain storming and exchange of opinion with our Minister of economics and energy, Albrecht Gerber.
The CEO of UGT, Dr. Manfred Seyfarth, the Managing Directors, Mr. Bernd Fürst and Dr. Sascha Reth, cut the symbolic ribbon together with Albrecht Gerber and Dr. Ulrich Müller.
