UGT was represented with a booth at the annual meeting of the German soil science society in Göttingen which took place from the 2nd to the 7th of September in Göttingen.
The task of the German Soil Science Society is to promote soil science and its relation to neighbouring disciplines. The German Soil Science Society (DBG) was already founded in 1926 in Berlin as a section of the International Soil Science Society (ISSS). It has been refounded in1949 in Wiesbaden, since than the activities have steadily grown and it is a forum of soil scientists and has a big scientific reputation. UGT uses this annual congress on the one hand to show the effective scientific equipment and products made by UGT to enable soil scientists to get exact knowledge concering soil conditions by the help of UGT ku-pf or Sedimat, only some examples of the specially developed products. Also the exchange of opinion with the soil scientists is important to further develop the narrow relationship between UGT and the scientific community. We were happy about the results of the congress and we got further input and ideas for our work in research and development and in our implementation in practice.
129th VDLUFA congress from the 12th to the 15th of. September 2017 in Freising Weihenstephan
UGT toook place with an exhibition on the 129. VDLUFA-congress at Campus Freising of the “Hochschule Weihenstephan-Triesdorf”.
The congress in this year had the general topic site specific land use economical and environmentally combatible. UGT works effectively with the scientists of this college and the participation in this congress was a forum to discuss new projects and ideas about the further cooperation.

Lysimeters – separating processes in flux measurement II – International Workshop at UGT South 17. – 19. October 2017
Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere transports are the key drivers for all processes in the environment. The aim is to show methods and solutions to enable environmental monitoring with the latest developments. The workshop includes scientific presentations and practical demonstrations. Lysimeters are a proven tool for ecosystem studies. They are the reference system for matter and energy fluxes in rather undisturbed systems. Big enough to provide a root space for representative plant stands, they measure precise and detailed enough to describe fluxes at high resolution. Pesticide leaching, and greenhouse gas emissions can be quantified for the well-defined lysimeter volume. Advanced measurement tools allow to separate processes in water and gas transfer, while the lysimeter forms the integral frame. Isotopic compositions help to distinct sources of greenhouse gas emissions. We all are facing the impacts of climate change. We must manage the risks and therefore monitoring and measuring is most important!
Sap flow and plant water potential measurements allow to separate through plants from soil surface fluxes.
Parallel measurements, pF determination of the soil and particle size distribution enable a complete knowledge of the specific environment. The workshop will give insight on the latest research on lysimeters with a specific focus on process separation with modern analysis tools.
In addition, practical demonstrations for:
• lysimeter excavation and instrumentation,
• sap flow and stem psychrometer installation,
• data networks and data bank use,
• CO2 chamber systems,
• laboratory measurements with ceramic plates
are given.

1.Technology Application Dialog in Müncheberg – Germany
“Digitalization – Value-added processes & changing business models” at 31.08.2017
UGT was host for a group of 30 companies of our region to discuss the changes in the process of digitalization in business.
Albrecht Gerber, Minister for Economy and Energy of the Federal State of Brandenburg provides positive impetus and listens attentively to the entrepreneurs and takes part in the lively discussion. Also Ms. Simona Koß, member of Parliament of the Federal State of Brandenburg used the opportunity to get into dialogue with the entrepreneurs.
Digitalization means to transform business in such a way that business operations and business functions will be improved and further developed. New business models arise. Companies worldwide change their processes. The companies in the Federal State of Brandenburg meet this challenge and amplify their activities by using digital technologies in a wider sense. Entrepreneurs of different branches used the opportunity to exchange opinion and define the current status and agree upon strategic targets concerning the challenges within the global economy. This meeting will be one within a series and is part of the networking of the companies within our region of Berlin Brandenburg.

14th Annual Meeting of AOGS Singapore 6-11th of August 2017
UGT has taken part successfully in the 14th Annual Meeting in Singapore which finishes on Friday the 11th of August.
Recognizing the need of cooperation when facing the global challenges scientists from all over Asia came and presented their findings and research topics.
UGT as a main supplier for monitoring equipment in the field of soil, hydrology and ecology was with its booth D02 a meeting point for scientists from more than 12 different Asian countries
Dr. Sascha Reth held a scientific conference in the innovative theatre on Tuesday, 8th of August. The UGT lysimeter technology and most different scientific applications were in the focus of his presentation.
Interesting questions highlighted that the lysimeter is a highly valuable research equipment by far not only for people in soil science but also in adjacent fields like meteorology, geography, hydrology or ecology. The questions after the session were partly already first starting points for new lysimeter projects. See further information at www.lysimeter.info
The AOGS was also a meeting point for us and our Australian partner ICT. Peter Cull and UGT discussed the future joint projects and explored more options for our future work.
The UGT booth at AOGS was visited on the one hand by experienced renowned scientists and on the other hand as well by young scientists from Singapore, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, South Korea, Phillipines , Vietnam and others. One of the most interesting points of discussion for visitors at the booth was the new EcoUnit.



In the margin of AOGS we also initiated the cooperation with our new partner Wykeham Farrance Services PTE LTD in Singapore. The owner and Managing Director Daniel Tan Hua Poh and the engineers Mr. Bjorn Chen and Ms. Tham Lai Shan UGT visited the office of Wykeham Farrances and gave a first introduction in our product range
We look forward to the projects in Singapore. At the exhibition our partners from Wykeham made use of the opportunity to get more familiar with the UGT product range.

The workshop in Freising Germany which takes place from the 17th to the 19th of October will be the first opportunity to meet up with our partners and other scientists and get familiar with UGT technique. We look forward to host our partners in Müncheberg and Freising.

AOGS was a successful exhibition and very well and effectively organized. We thank the organizing committee and are now striving to implement the new projects and further develop them. We say thanks and good bye to Singapore and the AOGS community.


Todays presentation at the AOGS: Lysimeters – a Modern Tool to Investigate Transport Processes in Ecosystems
The managing director of UGT – Dr. Sascha Reth – presents the latest innovations in weighing lysimeters at the AOGS.
The presentation will be at 8th August 2017 (Tuesday) between 12.45pm – 1.15pm in the Innovation Theater. Come in and discuss about your needs afterwards at our booth D02.

Lysimeters are an important way of determining the water balance for ecosystems using water balance parameters. In addition to the quantity, it is also possible to investigate the quality of soil and seepage water. Soil monoliths of defined dimensions are taken from their natural environment and given defined boundary conditions. In combination with corresponding measurement technology, it is possible to investigate the function and mode of action of ecosystems in this way. The results can be transferred from small to large scales and are amongst other things a good method to determine the evapotranspiration of a defined area (typically 1-2 m²), of the water and solute transport in a defined volume (typically 1-5 m³) and the degradation and conversion of substances under weathering influences. Due to the possibility of long term outdoor investigations under real location conditions, statements may be made using lysimeter tests on the water balance of certain climate scenarios, for example. Other possibilities are the comparison of several similar lysimeters in areas with different weathering conditions or the comparison of different soil types or different vegetation with the same weather over a longer time. These investigations provide the foundation for many models to estimate the effect of climatic change, the spread of contamination in the soil or the success of re-conditioning measures. Typical areas of use for lysimeters are agricultural land locations, forest locations, landfills and post-mining landscapes as well as areas with existing waste deposits in need of recultivation. The combination of several lysimeters is recommended for statistically verified statements.

Anthropogenic environmental changes threaten biodiversity as well as the interactions between trophic levels and consequently alter their influence on ecosystem functions. New experimental platforms, “Ecotron”, were developed to investigate the mechanisms underlying the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning by manipulating biodiversity at multiple trophic levels.

The Singapore economy is dedicated to rapid economic development. Singapore’s strong economy is a result of its open and market-oriented strategy. Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS) was already established in 2003 with the target to promote geosciences and its application for the benefit of humanity with a special focus also to global issues.
AOGS holds its annual conventions and thus provides a great forum to exchange scientific knowledge and discuss important geo-scientific facts. This conference also promotes the exchange between academics, members of public authorities and commercial people.
Prior to the conference UGT used the opportunity to meet up in Singapore with high level representatives of public and scientific organizations and agencies.
Julian Doelfs, Senior Consultant of the Singaporean German Chamber of Industry and Commerce met Dr. Sascha Reth and Kerstin Thomsen from UGT to inform about activities in the cooperation between Singapore and Germany especially in industry, research and technological development.


UGT had the chance to meet up with Victor Chew Chin Hong from the EDB Singapore which is the Economic Development Board. This leading government agency is responsible for planning and executing strategies to enhance Singapore’s position as a global business Centre. This interesting discussion gave us a great overview concerning the sustainable economic growth and opened us contacts to the vibrant business world in Singapore.

UGT understands itself beside of being an innovative and high-level producer also as a part of the scientific community. So, for us the visit in the NUS, National University of Singapore gave us a deeper inside in the needs of the scientists what refers to research concerning environmental topics. We had the chance to have a lively exchange with Prof. Lee Fook Hou, department of civil and environmental engineering and with Prof. Jiangyoung Hu, Director environmental program at the department of civil and environmental engineering.

Internship of Indian PhD student Soham Adla at UGT
I am an Indian PhD student working at the Chair of Hydrology and River Basin Management, Technical University of Munich. I am supervised by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Markus Disse (TU Munich) and Dr. Saket Pande (TU Delft). Within the framework of socio-hydrology, I am interested in developing a measurement driven decision support tool for irrigation management, which is easy to use by small-holder farmers in India.

My research objectives
- To identify existing water-centric gaps in sustainability of Indian winter wheat cropping and understand their underlying causes using socio-hydrological modeling.
- To survey the state-of-the-art in field measurement technology and develop a working proficiency in monitoring relevant farm parameters: the ongoing internship at UGT is central to this objective.
- To understand and model the hydrological processes occurring in the farm using opensource plot-scale hydrology-crop models: amongst others, I am considering the FREEWAT model http://www.freewat.eu/.
- To design a Decision Support System (DSS) which integrates measured data, farm process modeling and communication modules for improved irrigation management using a mobilephone application which is easy to use for farmers/NGOs.
The conceptual description (see figure) indicates field instruments (shown in black colour) which would transfer the farm measurements wirelessly as model inputs for the farm model. The model would analyse current conditions with the optimal conditions, and recommend a gricultural management decisions (eg. for scheduling irrigation, shown here using groundwater pumping). A crucial prerequisite to ensure farmer adoption is extensive bidirectional interaction while preparing the DSS.

My background andmotivation: I have an integrated Master degree in Civil Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITKanpur), with a major in Hydraulics and Water Resources Engineering. During my thesis, I focused on the hydrological effects of landuse change. I could sense a lack of stakeholder engagement in water management projects and hence made conscious efforts to understand the various stakeholder perspectives in small holder agriculture. In a project on participatory groundwater management at Samaj Pragati Sahayog (NGO in Madhya Pradesh, India), our team tested a community scale approach on water saving techniques in agriculture. Next, I worked in a project at IIT Kanpur where we conducted innovative interactions with villagers as preliminary preparation to establish a rural instrumentation network (Critical Zone Observatory). I am delighted that today, several out-door instruments provide realtime research grade data, despite the accompanying security risks in developing countries like India. I learnt that to design and solve morere levant research questions, it is essential to include “non-scientific” ground realities and engage stakeholders continuously to co-creates olutions which are both scientifically accurate and meaningful for the actual end-users.
