Plastic in the environment – sources, sinks, solutions

UGT GmbH visited the Kick-Off Meeting of the RUSEKU – “Representative Research Strategies for an Integrative System Understanding of Specific Inputs of Plastics into the Environment” project at the Federal Environmental Agency,  Umweltbundesamt in Berlin. It is certain that microplastics can be found almost everywhere in the environment. The project focuses on the development of new methods for better and faster measurement of microplastic content in different parts of the water cycle.
The UGT GmbH was represented by Christian Budach (M. Sc. Geoecology). As part of the working package: Development of sampling methods, he gave an overview of the state of the art of sediment sampler.

Besides the academic understanding of microplastic entry sources, causes and paths, market-ready procedures for efficient microplastic sampling should be developed in this project. These solutions should form a basis for legislative evaluation and for standardization in sampling procedures in urban sewage systems and in rivers.

Plastic can be found everywhere in today’s world – in the arctic, on the ocean floor, and on uninhabited islands. Tiny plastic particles have even been found to be present in the cells of animals and plants. Our knowledge of the extent of plastic contamination, however, is surprisingly low: exactly how much plastic is swimming in the oceans, where it comes from, how it behaves in rivers and seas, and what effects it might have on animal and humans, remains largely unknown.” (bmbf-plastik.de)

Tasks and goals of the project partners.

The project focusses on forest protection, e.g. on forest fire prevention and other risk prevention in extreme weather events. The main goal is the development of an adaptive and multifunctional networking sensor system for detection, hazard localization and classification.
A multifunctional network sensor system will be set up, tested and demonstrated in a forest near Britz, Brandenburg. The results and findings gained by this project can be helpful in numerous applications in the context of environmental monitoring, silvicultural adaptation strategies to climate change and for the reduction of forest degradation.

Last week, a field trip took place in the area under investigation to answer the following question: What wind speed do our pines withstand? In recent years, extreme weather events have occurred in Europe, and our forests have also been affected by strong storms. E.g. last year the storm Xavier, a heavy storm with hurricane gusts which moved across northern and eastern Central Europe, caused great damage.
In the tree pull experiment, a pine was equipped with many sensors. With these results, the scientists hope to obtain precise data for their climate calculation models. They want to be able to make more precise predictions about which tree species will break at which wind speeds (pulling force). In this case, the pine could withstand a pulling force of 600 kg, which corresponds to a wind speed of approximately 100 km/h.

Project News – REKKS

A lysimeter is going on a big journey

UGT GmbH is a part of an international working team that consisted of scientists from Kostanay State Pedagogical Institute, Altai State University, “AMAZONE” Kasachstan, Leibniz University Hannover, University of Halle, UFZ Halle, in the project REKKS.

Lysimeter

The task of the UGT was the development and fabrication of a weighable lysimeter station that operates during the whole year. Plant-accessible water is the limiting factor for agricultural yields in the steppe zone of Kazakhstan, especially in the light of the ongoing climate change with an increase in the mean annual temperatures along with more infrequent precipitation events in the study area.

A novel weighable lysimeter station consisting of two gravitation lysimeters and allowing long-term online operation will be developed and implemented, and quantitative and qualitative parameters of the soil water budget will be recorded for different soil management systems. High-resolution measurements concern for example the determination of the actual evaporation. Being equipped with a multitude of atmosphere and soil, the lysimeter station will also serve as a basis for the recording climate change effects in the region of the Kazakh dry steppes and compared with the development in the Kulunda steppe in southwest Siberia, where another lysimeter station is running.

Thank you Rio de Janeiro, thank you Brazil!

UGT was exhibitor at the 21st WCSS – World Congress of Soil Science in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
Exchange of opinion with scientists from all over the world was a key element of work here at the UGT booth in Brazil. The scientists showed interest in the products of UGT and sensors like the Full-range Tensiometer or our soil moisture sensor UMP-2 were in the focus of attention. Our RTG (Ready-To-Go lysimeters) were chosen by many scientists from Argentina, Chile via Japan to Russia or USA as a very sophisticated and efficient tool to observe the process of soil flux and evaporation. Scientists pointed out that with the new ku-pf 4.2 from UGT they could get more exact results and a very efficient new tool for research.

A  high-end scientific new tool!

Come and see us at our booth!

The ku-pf 4.2 SP is a laboratory instrument for the automatic determination of any saturated hydraulic conductivity ku and the pF curve (water tension curve).

Advantages of the new  ku-pF 4.2

  • Extension of the measuring range to the welting point  pF = 4.2
  • Real measured values to pF = 4.2 – no modeling

Ku-pF_RIO_Seite_2

By the help of our patented FRT – full range tensiometers  developed by UGT we make sure that the measurement  covers the complete range of pressure heads relevant for plants, that can reach up to 1500 kPa depending on the model. Unlike other systems used for this measuring range. Like this the ku-pf 4.2 is the only device that can do a real  measurement in this wide range.

We are looking forward to discuss with the scientists from all over the world this interesting new equipment – come and see us at our booth 29 in Rio.

Precipitation patterns across Central Europe are expected to change over the 21st century due to climate change. This may reduce water availability during the plant-growing season and hence affect the performance and vitality of ecosystems.

2Installation of the UGT mobile roof by our trained UGT staff. Photo credit: UGT GmbH

To shed more light on the effects of drought on maize a roof experiment was designed. The novelty of the roof construction is the automated height adjustability. It growths with the plants. With this design, the roof prevented direct precipitation on the plot, even on windy days. Therefore, the effects of the defined artificial irrigation are not influenced by the natural precipitation patterns.
